BANNED INGREDIENTS AROUND THE WORLD
THE NINE NO-NOS
From 2,300+ ingredients we ban, here’s a pocket list of nine categories that are considered common culprits you should look out for in your skincare.
Sulfates are detergents or surfactants commonly added to products to create lather or foam to remove dirt or oils from skin and hair. Sulfates are efficient yet harsh cleansers as they can strip the skin and hair with its natural oils, leaving them dry and irritated.
Adding silicones to formulations creates extra softness and spreadability, however, the skin does not absorb it so it sits on top of the skin, locking in moisture but also trapping in dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells, leading to breakouts as well as reduced cellular renewal.
Parabens are preservatives that are believed to disrupt hormone functions and has numerous linkages to breast cancer and reproductive issues. As parabens are washed down the drain, they also affect the environment, most specifically aquatic animals.
Short for Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid, EDTA is a potential skin irritant and pollutant that can be commonly found in skin and hair products. They are used to keep ingredients from causing unwanted changes to a product’s texture, odor and/or consistency.
Used as solvents, thickeners, softeners and moisture carriers, PEGs are manufactured with ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane - both known human carcinogens and environmental toxins. As penetration enhancers, PEGs allow harmful ingredients to be absorbed into the skin.
Mainly used as plasticizers, added to polymers such as polyvinyl chloride to increase flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity, phthalates have been found to have endocrine disruption effects and high toxicity on aquatic life and environments.
Chemical sunscreen can cause photoallergic reactions. Oxybenzone, for instance, absorbs through the skin in significant amounts, which can cause irritation. These chemicals are also banned because they disrupt the symbiotic relationship between the coral and algae.
Gluten is a name for proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale. While rich in moisture, they can trigger certain health conditions such as celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy, which can develop into itchy, blistering rashes and irritations.
Most animal-derived ingredients actually come from body parts of animals used to provide a particular cosmetic component. Ingredients like carmine, beeswax, honey and more have serious implications for not only vegetarians and vegans, but also to certain religious groups.
CLEAN VS. NATURAL BEAUTY
What’s the difference between clean and natural beauty? Here are some guidelines to decode both beauty labels.
|Free from toxic and potentially harmful ingredients||Can still be toxic or harmful (i.e. gluten and nuts, although natural, can cause irritations)|
|Environmentally-safe, sustainable, no animal ingredients and cruelty-free||May come from endangered plants, animal by-products or tested on animals|
|Ethically and sustainably sourced||Can still be sourced from questionable sources or farms|
|Stable and effective from naturally derived or non-toxic synthetic sources||Prone to climate and environmental changes, which can reduce shelf life, stability and efficacy|
|Contains only necessary ingredients||May still contain fillers or unnecessary ingredients (phthalates, PEGs, EDTA, paraffin, colors and dyes) that do not bring any benefit|
